Climbing Up to Archaeology in Neiwei (Kaohsiung)

𝗖𝗹𝗶𝗺𝗯𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗨𝗽 𝘁𝗼 𝗔𝗿𝗰𝗵𝗮𝗲𝗼𝗹𝗼𝗴𝘆 𝗶𝗻 𝗡𝗲𝗶𝘄𝗲𝗶, 2022

Media: High density gypsum, woodwork, digital print

Dimensions: Wall 475 x 300cm; Floor 100 x 150 x 250cm

Neiwei has been a site of human activity for a long time. Pottery, stone tools, animal bones, and shellfish remains have been excavated here. The continued agricultural and industrial development has made me consider the transition of spaces from natural to man-made and explore the transformation of the human body’s movement in different surroundings. I have replicated some of the neolith artefacts and other remains found in the Neiwei area and made them into “climbing holds” for a rock climbing wall. The audience can enjoy a visual as well as a tactile experience as they interact with the work which brings together elements from the prehistoric era and the modern industrial age.
